For the past few years, adrenal fatigue is a term that has become quite acquainted in the wellness community for good...and not so good reasons. It certainly has brought awareness to how the endocrine system operates. However, there's some scrutiny whether or not it really exists due to its indeterminate and vague symptoms.
Rightfully so, as the hormone system is complex. Let's break the system down so you may better understand how the body functions in this capacity.
On its own, the endocrine system excretes hormones that do various tasks, to include moderating the sleep cycle, regulate metabolism, govern sexual functions, and other homeostatic systems. In order for the hormones to communicate with other organs and tissues, the endocrine system conspires with the nervous system. Together, these to systems form the HPA axis; HPA is an acronym for hypothalamic pituitary adrenal. This feedback for the body's response to stress is initiated by the hormone corticotropin, which is usually involved in all HPA actions.
Its complexity works for our greater good, as this system has evolved with humanity since the beginning of our existence. There are three primary factors that balance or dysfunction the endocrine system: sleep, stress, and nutrition. A current illness can be a fourth contributing factor. It is through lifestyle choices that balance or imbalance is achieved. In addition to stress and adrenal fatigue, endocrine dysfunction surfaces through migraines, mood swings, gut issues, fibromyalgia, baldness, thyroid disease, and many other illnesses. Herbs may assist in balancing the endocrine system by binding to certain receptors, uniting with your body's existing hormones, improving HPA communication, provide hormones (i.e. phytoestrogens), and support different organ systems.
